The Stone Souls capture the zeitgeist in the cinematic ‘Mushroom’.

As confusion, hatred, and violence increasingly define the spirit of the times, how do we relate to ourselves, to one another, and to the world around us?
That is the subject of ‘Mushroom’, The Stone Souls’ most political album to date.
‘Mushroom’ follows two protagonists trying to hold their ground in a world dominated by the egos of political leaders and Big Tech billionaires.
The introductory track ‘Distant Star’ opens with the telling line: “We’re gonna ride into the storm.” It is immediately followed by ‘Bucking Bronco’, an anti-war song that rails against the aggressive tone and actions of the current US administration.
Next come tracks such as ‘Cobra Blood’—about the demonization of those who think differently, ‘Stillness’—regarding the blurring line between reality and illusion—and the title track, ‘Theme From Mushroom’, which addresses the ever-growing threat of war.
Only in the moving closing track, ‘Empty Hands’, do the two protagonists find their way back to each other.

The Stone Souls’ blend of Americana and Desert Rock is enriched with added color and a sense of menace by Marijke Gustorff’s mariachi trumpet and Sophie Ansems’ Southern Gothic violin.
‘Mushroom’ is a dark, cinematic album for misfits, loners, and dreamers who rather create life themselves than merely consume it.
